The Ballon d'Or in 1998 was awarded to Croatian footballer Davor Šuker. He won the award with 174 points, beating out second-place finisher Zinedine Zidane by a comfortable margin of 54 points. At the time, Šuker was playing for Real Madrid and had just helped lead Croatia to a third-place finish in the 1998 World Cup. This was the first Ballon d'Or win for Šuker, who had previously been named the top scorer at the 1998 World Cup.
